The Kirk Apartments in Mason City recently burned down leaving the historic landmark in rubble. Despite the flames being put out, several fires have rekindled adding to the destruction.
Area residents and organizations are pitching in to help the displaced families from the fire. Diane Wilson from Iowa Legal Aid has seen firsthand what the destruction has done and how area residents have responded.
Wilson advises everyone to be prepared for situations like these regardless of the disaster.
While you may not be able to recover your personal property after the disaster, especially after a fire, you will be able to carry on with your personal and financial information. This goes for both owners and renters.
From the time you terminate your lease, the landlord has thirty days to return your deposit. Anyone with questions can contact Iowa Legal Aid for help in recovering their deposit and unused rent money or other legal assistance.
