COLLEGE BASEBALL: Waldorf scores 42 runs, beats Valley City State twice

The Waldorf baseball team had an offensive explosion on Thursday afternoon at the high school/Waldorf shared baseball field.

The first game seemed mild and routine through the first five innings. Valley City State led Waldorf 6-3, but both teams exploded offensively through the final four innings. Valley City State was scheduled to host these games, but due to weather – the games were moved to Forest City, and VCSU remained the home team.

Waldorf opened the sixth, scoring two runs to close to within one run, but Valley City State scored five in the bottom of the sixth to lead 11-8.

In the seventh inning, Waldorf added seven runs; they scored eight in the eighth and five in the ninth inning, while Valley City State scored just nine runs through the final three innings. Valley City State trailed Waldorf 25-13 going into its final three outs in the bottom of the ninth – but its rally came up short, scoring seven runs. That gave Waldorf a 25-20 win in the first game.

Waldorf was confident going into the second game with lefty Marc Luna on the hill. He helped Waldorf stun #5 Bellevue last week and looked sharp again yesterday. Luna is 3-2 this season with a 5.01 ERA and 58 Ks in 41.1 Innings pitched. He fired six innings of four-hit two-earned run ball, walked just three Valley City batters, and struck out 15 more.

The Waldorf offense gave him a buffer that didn’t hurt. They scored 12 runs in the first four innings, while Valley City State could only mustard one run giving the Warriors an 11-run lead. Davis Churchman started the game with a solo blast in the top of the first. That was followed by a three-run shot by Atticus Smith, giving Waldorf a 4-0 lead in the first frame.

Waldorf would go on to win 17-4 in the second game with five home runs. They had 12 hits in the game and walked six times as well.
