COLLEGE BASEBALL: Waldorf takes down nationally ranked Bellevue

After losing the first game on Friday while visiting the fifth-ranked Bruins, Waldorf bounced back in the second game to defeat the national powerhouse 5-4 in extra innings.

It wasn’t an ideal start for Waldorf in the second game of a four-game set, with two games played on Friday and two more on Saturday. Drew Staley singled home Takumi Maeno in the second, and Logan Grant homered in the fourth to give the home team a 2-0.

Waldorf fought back with an RBI double off the bat of Juan Jorge, a junior from the Bronx, in the fifth – he would later come home and score on an RBI from Davis Churchman, a senior from Ankeny. Waldorf wasn’t done in the top of the fifth – they scored two more runs on Samien Sanchez’s homer to lead 4-2.

Bellevue hit back-to-back home runs in their half of the sixth after coming up empty in the fifth inning, and the game went into extra innings. In extras, Atticus Smith was the hero. He scored Zach Meyer with an RBI single in the top of the extra frame. Waldorf held the Bruin’s bats at bay in the bottom of the final inning after starting with a bunt single from Anotony Lind. Though, the ensuing sacrifice attempt, flyout, and grounder ended the Bruin’s chance and gave Waldorf the upset win.

Waldorf dropped both games on Saturday, 6-0 and 20-4, to come home with a 1-3 weekend record. This season, the Warriors are 13-20 overall and 8-8 in NSAA play.
