SPORTS NEWS NOVEMBER 11, 2022

The top-ranked and defending Class A champion West Hancock football team survived and advanced to their 3rd state championship game in 4 years Thursday afternoon, as they outlasted a very game 4th ranked Lynnville-Sully 22-14 in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The Eagles led 14-0 at the half, but a disastrous 3rd quarter left the game tied at 14. The Eagles then marched 75 yards in 13 plays, eating up half the 4th quarter, before Kale Zuehl rumbled in from the 1 to give the Eagles the lead. A Mitchell Smith run for the conversion ended the scoring. A final Lynnville-Sully drive ended with a Mitchell Smith interception at the goal line. Smith also led the offense with 123 yards rushing and a touchdown, Cousin Kellen Smith added 99 yards, while Zuehl had 98 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Eagles advance to next Thursday’s championship game to face a familiar foe. Grundy Center won the other semifinal 49 to 20 over Woodbury Central, and now the Eagles and Spartans will face off for the 4th year in a row, and the 3rd championship game. Kickoff is set for 1:06 pm Thursday, and Kevin Wilson and Jay Hiscocks will have the live play by play from the Dome beginning at 12:45 pm on KIOW, B103, and audio streaming at kiow.com. Good Luck to Coach Mark Sanger and the Eagles next Thursday.
