Feenstra Votes to Punish Chinese Fentanyl Manufacturers

U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) joined the U.S. House of Representatives in unanimous passage of the Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act. This legislation would impose sanctions on Chinese manufacturers of fentanyl.

“The fentanyl crisis has impacted every community in my district and across the country. I have heard too many stories of parents who have lost a child to an overdose – a senseless tragedy that can be prevented with the right policies. As a father of four, my heart breaks for these families, but my resolve to keep deadly fentanyl out of our communities and away from our kids only strengthens,” said Rep. Feenstra. “We know that fentanyl is being illegally manufactured in China, shipped to Mexico, and smuggled across our open border – yet President Biden refuses to do anything about it. I’m proud to support the Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act to impose costly sanctions on Chinese fentanyl manufacturers, halt the flow of deadly fentanyl into our rural communities, and protect our families and our children.”

More specifically, the Stop Chinese Fentanyl Act would amend the Fentanyl Sanctions Act to change the definition of what constitutes a “foreign opioid trafficker” and include certain Chinese entities that fail to intervene and prevent the production, distribution, and sale of illicit fentanyl.

Earlier this year, following U.S. Department of Energy and FBI assessments that the COVID-19 virus likely originated and leaked from a Chinese virology lab, Feenstra introduced the Holding Countries Accountable for Negligent Chemical and Biological Programs Act, which would amend the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination (CBW) Act of 1991 to impose sanctions on foreign nations whose chemical and biological programs are found to operate with “gross negligence.”
