West Hancock Addresses Legislative Changes on Library Books

District must review all books in their library system.

The Iowa Legislature has handed down a number of changes to area school districts. These must be acted on over the summer in order to conform to the new rules. West Hancock Community School District Superintendent Wayne Kronemann understands what has to be done.

One of the major changes had to do with books in school libraries.

A typical school library has hundreds of books on virtually every subject that is covered in the classroom, so in order for this to be done, some outside help may be needed according to Kronemann.

There is also the question of content criteria for the retention or disposal of the books. However, the changes don’t end there according to Kronemann.

Due to the number of changes in the student handbook, the publication may come later than usual to the students.

Kronemann explained that the district gets its advice from a very reliable source.

All of these changes will come at a cost which the district must absorb in its annual budget in order to remain compliant with the state.
