Women Build Event to Build Walls for the Next Local Habitat Home

The sound of saws, hammers, and power tools are common on a construction site. What’s not so common is that the people doing the construction are actually women instead of men. That’s what will be happening this weekend at the annual “Women Build” event sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa (HFHNCI).  There will be teams of women from area churches and businesses working to build the walls of the new home. Adding to the mix of volunteers are dignitaries such as Senator Amanda Ragan and Representative Sharon Steckman to practice their construction skills. The event will be held from 9:00 am-3:00pm in the ReStore parking lot at 517 1st Street NW in Mason City. The response was overwhelming and there are no remaining volunteer spots to fill, but members of the community are welcome to stop by and check out the action.

The home is being built at 22nd St SE. for a local mother and her three children thanks to the sponsorship and support of the Dale Larson Family and Thrivent Financial. The next step will be to transport the walls to the site where the foundation has been prepared, and the wall-raising will be done on August 14th by members of Trinity Lutheran Church.  Many more church groups and volunteers will be needed to complete the home on schedule by next spring.

Applications are currently being accepted for additional homeownership opportunities throughout the area. Habitat qualifies families and individuals who are unable to get approved for a traditional loan, but have a steady income and just need a little “hand up” to become a homeowner. Habitat also provides home repairs to residents in need throughout the six-county service area.
