Iowa State University Northern Research and Demonstration Farm To Hold Field Day June 25

The Iowa State University Northern Research and Demonstration Farm will host a summer field day on Thursday, June 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the north farm, located at 310 South Main Street, Kanawha.

The field day will begin with comments from Greg Guenther, president of the North Central Iowa Research Association, and Matt Schnabel, farm superintendent.

The following field tours are scheduled:

  • Margaret Smith, forage agronomist with Albert Lea Seed, will discuss mid-to-late-season oat production management practices.

  • Meaghan Anderson, extension field agronomist at Iowa State, will lead participants through a herbicide injury demonstration.

  • Angie Rieck-Hinz and Gentry Sorenson, extension field agronomists at Iowa State, will highlight current growing season conditions and impacts on crop growth and development.

“Farmers, landowners, local ag businesses and students are invited to attend and have a chance to speak directly with Iowa State field agronomists on current issues in agriculture. This year, in particular, has been a tough year for planting, replanting decisions and herbicide applications,” said Sorenson. “Also, having direct access to expertise regarding oat production is crucial for decision-making, as we are seeing a rapid increase in oat production acres across northern Iowa.”

Registration and refreshments will start at 8:30 a.m., and the field day will begin at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. There is no cost to attend, and the meeting is open to the public.

Those who are attending are encouraged to register by June 22 by calling Matt Schnabel at 641-762-3247 or emailing northernrf@iastat.edu. Certified Crop Adviser continuing education credits will be available.

The association appreciates the support and sponsorship from First Citizens Bank, Gold-Eagle Cooperative and Calcium Products.
