Heavy Rain, Severe Storms Possible Across Iowa Today and Friday

DES MOINES, Iowa — The National Weather Service in Des Moines is warning of two rounds of heavy rain and possible severe weather across Iowa today through Friday night.

The first round is expected this afternoon into tonight. Storms may produce heavy rainfall, hail, damaging wind and possibly a tornado or two. The highest severe weather risk today is considered isolated, with storms possible mainly between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The Weather Service says storms late today into tonight may produce a swath of 2 to 4 inches of rainfall by sunrise Friday across portions of southern into central Iowa, with locally higher amounts possible. That amount of rain, combined with heavy rainfall rates, could lead to flash flooding. Ponding is also expected in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

A Flood Watch for flash flooding is in effect late this afternoon through sunrise Friday for parts of Iowa.

Storms are expected to end by midday Friday before a second round develops late Friday afternoon into Friday night. Forecasters say additional heavy rainfall and severe storms are expected, with flash flooding, large hail and damaging wind gusts possible.

The exact timing and location of Friday’s severe weather threat remains uncertain and will depend on how tonight’s storms evolve.

The National Weather Service is urging people to stay weather aware, especially those with outdoor plans. Residents should have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to move indoors quickly if severe weather approaches.

Drivers are also reminded to never cross flooded roads. Flooding can be difficult to see during the day and nearly impossible to see at night.
