Area residents are gearing up for a three day weekend away from the office or job to be with family or friends during the holiday weekend. As is often lost is the meaning of the holiday that they are enjoying. Winnebago County Veterans Affairs Director Mary Lou Kleveland stated that the holiday is more than just picnics and family get togethers.
The holiday got its roots from the war that nearly torn the nation apart.
Kleveland would like everyone to remember the Memorial Day holiday as a day of remembrance unlike Veterans Day.
Kleveland also reminds everyone that there is a moment for all Americans to pause and remember our fallen heroes.
She encourages everyone to take that moment and remember.
