Fire Contained at Eagle Lake Game Management Area After Overnight Response

BRITT, Iowa — Fire crews from multiple agencies responded Monday night to a fire at the Eagle Lake State Game Management Area near Britt, according to the Britt Fire Department.

The fire was reported at approximately 8:40 p.m. on May 11. When firefighters arrived, they discovered the blaze was burning in an area of the game management property that was difficult to access.

Using their knowledge of the terrain and previous experience in the area, fire personnel developed a plan to conduct a large controlled backburn in an effort to protect properties on the western side of the game management area.

Officials said the controlled backburn was successful, and crews allowed the main fire to burn itself out.

Firefighters remained on scene until approximately 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. No structures were lost in the incident.

The Britt Fire Department was assisted by the Garner Fire Department, Crystal Lake Fire Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, and Hancock County Secondary Roads.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
