Severe storms possible across Iowa Thursday and Friday; large hail, tornadoes among threats

MASON CITY, Iowa — Multiple rounds of severe weather are expected across Iowa beginning Thursday and continuing into Friday, with large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes all possible.

Much of central and eastern Iowa is under a Level 2 (slight) risk for severe storms on Thursday, with activity expected to begin as early as noon in central Iowa and move into eastern portions of the state by early evening.

The strongest storms are expected between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday, with the highest likelihood of severe weather shifting east through the afternoon and early evening hours.

All severe hazards are possible Thursday, including damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail and tornadoes. The tornado threat is expected to increase farther east across the state.

Hail could reach significant sizes, particularly east of Interstate 35, while non-thunderstorm wind gusts near 40 mph are also possible in southeastern Iowa.

Storms are expected to move quickly to the east-northeast at around 50 mph, increasing the potential for rapidly changing conditions.

Round two expected Friday

Another round of severe weather is forecast for Friday afternoon and evening, with a higher threat level possible in some areas.

Numerous severe storms could develop between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, again bringing risks of damaging winds, large hail and possible tornadoes.

Heavy rain and flooding concerns

In addition to severe storms, multiple rounds of rainfall are expected through Friday, with total amounts likely exceeding 1 inch and possibly topping 2 inches in some areas, especially across central and eastern Iowa.

While widespread flooding is not expected, there is a low risk of localized flash flooding, particularly in urban and low-lying areas, along with rising water levels on rivers and streams.

Stay weather aware

Residents are urged to remain alert and prepared, especially those with outdoor plans. Having multiple ways to receive warnings — including weather radios, mobile alerts and local media — is strongly recommended.
