Police investigate shooting near Casey’s in Mason City; victim expected to recover

MASON CITY, Iowa — Mason City police are investigating a shooting reported late Wednesday near the Casey’s store at 9th Street and North Federal Avenue.

Dispatchers began receiving calls about multiple gunshots around 8:49 p.m. in the 800 block of North Federal Avenue, according to police. Officers arrived and learned a 35-year-old man had already been taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. Police said the man suffered gunshot wounds to an extremity that were not considered life-threatening.

Investigators canvassed the neighborhood, spoke with residents and located additional shell casings outside the victim’s apartment at 729 N. Federal Ave., near the rear door along the east side of the building in an alley, police said. Multiple tenants — including children — were inside apartment buildings at 725 and 729 N. Federal Ave. when the shots were fired, according to the department.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are asking anyone with information to contact Lt. Brett Hollander at the Mason City Police Department at 641-494-3564. Police also said they will begin nuisance property abatement against the landlord due to ongoing issues at the apartment.
