Ahead of Title 42 Ending, Grassley Joins Ernst in the Fight to Finish the Border Wall

The commonsense effort would turn already purchased and unused border materials over to states to finish the job.

Title 42, which allows for the expedited removal of migrants who have illegally entered the country, is set to expire this week. As a result, illegal immigration is expected to skyrocket and border communities are already bracing for impact.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) joined Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) in proposing a straightforward solution: turn over the unused materials purchased to construct the Southern border barrier to any state willing to finish the job. The BUILD IT Act would require the federal government to transfer any material associated with the construction of the Southern border to any state, upon request, for the materials’ original purpose. Both Arizona and Texas have initiated state action to continue construction on their sections of the border wall.

“While the Biden administration attempts to the bend the truth about the crisis at the Southern border, the numbers speak for themselves,” Grassley said. “Under President Biden’s watch, more than five million illegal immigrants have entered our country and nearly a quarter of a billion dollars’ worth of border materials have gone untouched in the meantime. It’s time to restore common sense and sanity to our border, which is why I’m joining Sen. Ernst to introduce the BUILD IT Act.”

“This week, due to President Biden’s failure, the Southern border will go from crisis to catastrophe,” Ernst said. “Instead of securing the border, the Biden administration canceled border wall projects and left materials to rack up dust and dollars. Here’s a simple solution, Mr. President: let’s put the border materials to use, end the taxpayer-funded waste, stop the unprecedented flow of illegal migrants, and finish the wall!”
