HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD: Dakota Carlson breaks a school record, Forest City finishes fourth at Indoor championship
Video by Luke Kearney
The Forest City boys track and field team competed at the inaugural North Iowa Indoor Championships on Friday in Clear Lake. The Indians finished fourth as a team, while junior Dakota Carlson started just how he left off in 2022 – jumping to new heights.
After passing 5-8, 5-10, 6-0, 6-2, and 6-4 without problems, Carlson ran into 6-6. He missed his first two attempts, but with the pressure of winning the event already off his shoulders, Carlson dug deep and passed 6-6 on his final jump. The momentum of that carried him past 6-7 without a miss. Carlson had a shot at the record and wouldn’t miss it.
Carlson did take three attempts at 6-9 but was unsuccessful. Nonetheless a successful day for the junior. His jump as of Friday was the second-highest in the state and the 16th-highest in the country in 2023. His mark also meets Drake’s Blue Standard.
Carlson wasn’t the only Indian to win an event. Vinton Feldman won the 200m with a time of 23.69.
