Winnebago County Searches for a New VA Commissioner

The Winnebago County Veterans Affairs Office is searching for a new commissioner to fill a seat on the board. With the passing of Commissioner Barney Ruiter who also served as Mayor of Forest City, the board needs to find someone to fill that seat according to Winnebago County Veterans Affairs Department Head Mary Lou Kleveland.

She went before the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors to discuss the situation with them.

Kleveland has sent out notifications this week to Winnebago County media outlets about the vacancy. The notice is also be found on the Winnebago County website and the Winnebago County Veterans Affairs Facebook page. These notices contain information on how and where people can apply for the position.

The VA Commissioner Board will review the applications and then make a recommendation to the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors. The new commissioner will fulfill Ruiters term on the board which ends in 2023. The supervisors will then decide if they want the new commissioner to return for another term or face the task of finding a replacement.

Veteran women in Winnebago County are strongly encouraged to apply and there is a reason according to Kleveland.

Those veterans who may be interested in this position should contact the Winnebago County Veterans Affairs Office at (641) 585-5736.
