Waldorf Womens Wrestling Has a Strong Showing

Alaura Couch claimed the crown, and De’anna Prince nearly did the same, leading the Waldorf women’s wrestling team in a strong day on the mats at the EZFlex Invitational hosted by Ottawa University on Sunday.

Couch claimed the title in the 101-pound weight class, going undefeated on the day, while Prince battled her way into the 130-pound championship match with a pair of victories before falling in her title bid.

Couch scored an 11-0 technical fall win over Tory Marrufo of MacMurray College in her 101-pound semifinal match – her first match of the day – then won the EZFlex title by pinfall in 4 minutes, 9 seconds over Kassidy Ramirez of Bacone College in the final.

As for Prince, who got a first-round bye, a 10-0 tech fall win over Yessenia Escobar of Lyon College in the quarterfinals and an 8-0 decision victory over Caitlyn Kaz of Jamestown in the semis sent her into the finals.

Battling hard to give the Warriors a second title, Prince came up just short against Logan Mize of Lyon in the championship match.

Prince was one of two Warriors battling at 130 pounds as Akina Yamada picked up a pair of wins, as well, and finished sixth.

Also starting her day with an opening-round bye, Yamada got knocked into the consolation bracket by Jamestown’s Cara Romeike in their quarterfinal match.

Yamada responded with a pair of pinfall wins, beating Missouri Valley’s Bethany Davis in 2:27, and Oklahoma City’s Abby Mainzer in :48 seconds in the consolation bracket, before a consolation semifinal loss.

Also doubling up in the 170-pound weight class, Rachel Dreeszen finished sixth for the Warriors, while Lilia Rangel did not place.

Dreeszen won her quarterfinal match over Bacone’s Jythssel Mascorro in 5:15, after receiving a first-round bye. A semifinal loss followed by a consolation semifinal setback landed her in sixth.

Looking to build on Sunday’s good showing, the Warriors return to the mats quickly, competing at the Bearcat Open on Saturday in Lebanon, Ill., the team’s final regular-season event before heading to nationals on Feb. 9.
