The Belmond-Klemme Community School District has decided to reinstate the income surtax on residents in the Belmond-Klemme Community School District. The tax was passed along with the school budget for the fiscal year 2017-18.
According to officials in the school district, the tax is expected to raise a little over $105,000 from a 3% surtax on income. Legally, school boards can implement up to 20% on residential incomes. Belmond-Klemme Community Schools have done this tax implementation before, as in 2016, but failed to collect it. This led to some turmoil amongst administration and the board on the failure to do so. The budget for the 2015-16 included the surtax as did 2014.
The district also intends to levy $16.07 per $1,000 of assessed valuation of property which is an increase of two cents. As far as the surtax is concerned, the money won’t be realized by the district for another eighteen months because the state will send it to them. Board officials did not see that as a problem in executing the budget for next year.
