School bus worker fired, denied unemployment

A Des Moines public schools employee responsible for supervising children on a school bus has been denied unemployment benefits and was fired for swatting a child on the top of the head. Ahmed Karshe was fired April 2.

He’s denied assaulting or threatening students. His job was to help supervise children riding the bus, some of whom have disabilities. A bus surveillance video posted on the newspaper’s website shows Karshe swatting a child. On March 28 a parent complained and school officials launched an investigation.

His firing became public at a recent hearing concerning his request for unemployment benefits. Karshe was denied benefits by a judge who found he’d committed workplace misconduct.
