The Winnebago County Relay For Life event provides an opportunity for the community to come together to raise funds for cancer research and support cancer survivors in their fight against cancer. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with loads of entertainment and refreshments for all to enjoy.
A host of new activities will be on hand this year, including two large inflatables from Happy Go Lucky which will be available from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a short intermission at 4:00 p.m. for the opening ceremonies. Tickets for the inflatables are $1 each or 6 for $5.
Bear Creek Outdoors will also have an Archery Tag course set up from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at a cost of $10 per person.
Massage therapist Michelle Schlutter from Body & Skin Rejuvenation will be on hand for massages from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Cost is $1 per minute and 50% will be donated to the Relay for Life event. Jody Smith’s team, The Polar Express, will also be providing haircuts. From Both the massage and hair cuts are offered with a free-will donation.
From tumblers, dancers, and singers, Relay For Life has a little bit of everything. Starting at 10 a.m., Relay teams begin offering their food and items for sale and may start walking. The dunk tank is also available to dunk for a cause.
A few more highlights of the day include: Dr. Melanie Harms Espeland, Ph.D. MT-BC will provide a fun CADENCE music class for youngers at 3:30 p.m. and will also sing the National Anthem at 4:00 for opening ceremonies, as well as provide additional entertainment at 5:00 p.m.
At 2:00 p.m., Dancing with the Stars dance teams Paige Swearingen and Max Stevenson, as well as Natalie Moore and Jason Mielke will perform.
Opening Ceremonies are scheduled at 4:00 p.m. with the Presentation of Colors by the American Legion, Boy Scouts and FAVA. Dave Nagle of CDI will also speak on behalf of corporate sponsors. The Freedom Lap for veterans and families; Welcome presentation by Carolyn Sunde, Relay Chair and Byron Ruiter, Mayor of Forest City; Invocation by Pastor Nathaniel Schmidt from Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Welcome from Corporate Sponsors with AJ Taylor, from KIOW and Presentation of Corporate Sponsor plaques by Steve Lovik, ACS Community Manager.
Honoring cancer survivors is important to the American Cancer Society and the Relay event hosts a Survivors’ lap and reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Waldorf Atrium. A ceremony and dinner for Survivors is scheduled at 6:15 p.m. in the Waldorf Ballroom.
Sheltered Reality is also performing at 7:30 p.m. The Luminaria Ceremony begins at 8:30 p.m. with AJ Taylor and the Run for a Life 5K Glow fun run/walk begins at 9:00. Ceremonies end with at 9:45 p.m. with a spectacular fireworks show sponsored by Tim Petersen.
