Waldorf University women’s golfer Fernanda Valdes earned North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Golfer-of-the-Week honors, which was announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Valdes is coming off an impressive performance, capturing the individual title with a 36-hole score of 153 while leading the Warriors to a runner-up finish in last weekend’s Wartburg Invitational. She carded rounds of 78 and 75 on the par-72 layout at Waverly’s Prairie Links Golf Course during the two-day tournament, which concluded on Saturday.
Waldorf finished with a 675-stroke team total, delivering rounds of 333 and 342. With two strong rounds, Valdes topped the field by six strokes. The victory marked her third individual title of the year.
Valdes currently leads the Warriors, averaging 81 strokes per round. The junior from Morelia, Mexico has recorded nine top-10 finishes, including eight top-five performances throughout the fall and spring campaigns.
Waldorf is gearing up for the spring stage of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Championships and open the two-day tournament on April 24 at 9 a.m. in Onalaska, Wis. Following the first two rounds of the cumulative 72-hole conference tournament in the fall, the Warriors hold third place in the team standings with 701 strokes while Valdes is currently in fourth after shooting a 165. The conference’s team and individual champion advance to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championships, slated for May 23-26 at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
