The Senate Agriculture Committee, which includes Iowa Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, will vote on the USDA Secretary nominee today. It’s expected Sonny Perdue will receive committee approval, but it remains unclear when a full Senate vote will be held. Grassley is hoping it happens before the Senate’s April recess.
Perdue served as governor of Georgia between 2003 and 2011. Grassley is certain Perdue will eventually be approved as the new leader of the USDA.
If confirmed, the 70-year-old Perdue would replace former U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack, Iowa’s governor from 1999 to 2007.
