Fire Breaks Out in a Home with Intellectually Disabled Residents

Authorities say several people have been treated for smoke inhalation after a fire at a home in Mason City. The fire was reported late Sunday night. The fire occurred at 22 N. Jefferson.

The Mason City Police Department says a neighbor noticed the fire, ran to the house to alert residents and helped get several to safety. Police say the home is occupied by clients of Opportunity Village, a charity that serves people with intellectual disabilities.

Four were taken to the hospital, according to authorities, but none required an ambulance and it is believed that the hospital checks were done as a precaution.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the blaze today.
