Area Hammered by Strong Storms Overnight

At midnight, most of the area was clear to partly cloudy. By 2am strong storms accompanied by very strong winds howled through area communities and cities. Some storms were clocking winds of up to 40 mph which caused damage to area trees, landscaping, homes, and blocked streets. Cloud to ground lightning was reported throughout the area and rainfall amounts ranged from .7 of an inch to 2 inches near Britt.

Several areas have downed power lines and officials are urging that none of these be cleared by residents. Instead, wait for power officials to arrive and assess the situation, then clear the area for you.

Utility workers are trying to restore power to several areas after the storm. Officials were unsure when full power would be restored as many areas have to deal with blown transformers or downed power lines under trees.

Officials are bracing for another round of heavy storms this evening as forecasters say another round, possibly severe will occur later this afternoon and evening.
