North Iowa 4-H members had a new type of campout this summer at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. Rather than spending the night in tents or cabins, members slept with the penguins.
During this first campout at the zoo, forty-seven 4-H members from five counties had an evening tour of the zoo after hours, learning about the habits and habitat of many animals. The members slept in the penguin house and under a tunnel with the sharks. The next morning, members were up with the sun, again touring facilities prior to the zoo opening. Up close and personal visits were had with many of the animals. Members spent the morning re-visiting their favorite animals once the zoo opened to the public. The campout finished with an IMAX movie learning about the lemurs of Madagascar.
