SPORTS NEWS AUGUST 1 2014
The Newman Knights have punched their ticket back to the 1A state baseball title game with a thrilling 5-4 win over Don Bosco of Gilbertville Thursday afternoon in Des Moines. The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 1 inning, but needed heroics from Joe Burgmeier on the mound and at the plate to get the win. Don Bosco scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th to tie the game at 4, when Burgmeier entered in relief of Kaden Wadle. Burgmeier got a pop out and a strike out to end the inning. After a pair of intentional walks, Parker Dondlinger hit a long single to centerfield to plate Burgmeier, and put Newman into the title game for the 3rd year in a row.
