Everyone is invited to attend a VA-sponsored Mental Health First Aid training that will be held in Forest City, Iowa, July 28th and 29th from 9am to 4pm at the Family Alliance for Veterans of America (FAVA). The training is for everyone and anyone. The course goals are:
- Gaining knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental illnesses and addictions,
- Learning a 5-step action plan for helping those developing a mental illness or in a mental health crisis,
- Identifying multiple types of professional and self-help resources for individuals with a mental illness or addiction, and
- Reducing stigma and increasing your confidence in and likelihood to help an individual in distress.
Classes will include practical applications through exercises and role playing. All materials and lunch will be provided. Pre-enrollment is required and the enrollment form must be completed and returned by Wednesday, July 23rd. Class size is limited to 25 participants, and classes fill up quickly so participants need to return the enrollment form as soon as possible. Attendance on both days is required to be certified as a Mental Health First Aider and receive CEUs (for social workers and nurses) and/or a certificate of attendance.
Check with FAVA in Forest City for applications.
