Monday Weather Plays Role in Accident

The Mason City Fire department had to extract a victim of an injury accident through the windshield. Helen Smith lost control of her vehicle on 12th Street in Mason City and ended up rolling into a ditch on the south side of the road. She remained in the vehicle for approximately 20 minutes while emergency officials arrived on the scene and assessed the situation.

The mid morning accident forced firefighters to have to cut the windshield and rescue Smith through the cut open space. Smith was transported to the Mercy Medical Center where officials say that she was treated and released. Officials were able to right the car and clear it from the scene.

Ice played a major role in traffic issues throughout the area, more so in the northern sections along the Iowa and Minnesota border. I-35 was fairly clear past south of the Northwood exit, but north of it and onto I-90 became very treacherous in some spots. Officials did not report an fatalities as a result of the morning wintry storm.
