Power Outage Effected North Iowa

A power outage has effected hundreds of customers of Heartland Power in North Iowa, including KIOW Radio.  The power was lost at KIOW at 8:15pm on Thursday, and remained off until 12:30am Friday.  Heartland Power officials said crews have been working on restoring power to areas like Buffalo Center and Thompson, but the heavy snow has made the progress slow.  Some roads have not been plowed and crews are having a difficult time reaching certain areas.

KIOW Radio did have generator back-up power, but a malfunction in the system left the station dark for more than 12 hours.  Tony Coloff, Owner and General Manager, said that the generator was just serviced several weeks ago and working fine.  He said the storm may have damaged a portion of the back-up system.  A repair crew was dispatched from Maple, Minnesota, to repair the unit.

Power was restored by Heartland Power at 12:30pm on Friday.  As soon as power was restored, tape-delayed broadcasts from the State Wrestling Tournament with Karl Wooldridge were broadcast on FM 107.3, and the normal broadcast schedule resumed on KIOW.
