Highway 3 in Hampton will have a permanent 4 way stop according to the City Council. Opting for a cost of $1,700, the council voted in favor of the least expensive option. Refurbishing the broken lights at the intersection would have cost the city council around $30,000. The council was seeking assistance from the Iowa Department of Transportation to help fund the repairs. The other option totaled $150,000 and that involved redoing the lights entirely.
The Iowa Department of Transportation was asking the council that if they wanted financial assistance, they would have had to reduce the number of lanes available for use along the highway in their town. The city was unwilling to make those changes and opted for the four way stop.
