Funding Vote Expected Today on Des Moines Bridge

Jackson Street Bridge

The City Council is expected to voteĀ at this hourĀ on a public-private fundraising plan for saving the Southwest Fifth Street bridge. The money would be used to repair the Southwest Fifth and Southwest First Street bridges so they could be used as part of the Meredith Trail system.

The Southwest Fifth Street bridge was built in 1898 and is commonly known as the Jackson Street bridge. It was closed in March after an engineering report cited deterioration and safety concerns. The report cited an estimated repair cost of between $1.75 million and $3.75 million.

Since the bridge’s closure, bridge supporters have circulated a petition and lobbied city leaders to save the local landmark.
