A plan by the Minneapolis police chief to have the state investigate officer misconduct in her department is on hold.
Gov. Mark Dayton’s spokesman Matt Swenson says Chief Janee Harteau failed to notify the Commissioner of Public Safety and other state officials before unilaterally announcing the change. Swenson said the governor considers that “extremely inappropriate.”
Minneapolis police spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington says the department has been working with the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension since this summer on the plan to have the BCA investigate certain critical incidents involving officers.
Harteau says the move is meant to show neutrality in handling department misconduct cases.
