According to officials with the Iowa Department of Natural resources, about 430 of the 2,310 manure confinement site applicators have not yet completed annual training. That is about 20% of all applicators in the state. Officials are saying that number is lower than last year by 30%. Applicators have to renew their confinement applicators certificate every three years. The certificate can be achieved either by testing or a three year training process.
The training programs give applicators updates on current regulations along with updates on Iowa’s nutrient reduction strategy. There are also insights on how to handle land applications which may help in a more efficient application process. There are training videos available at the local county extension office.
Applicators who have not renewed must do so by scheduling an appointment with the county extension office.
