The Garner City Council will convene tonight at 7pm with twenty one items on the agenda. The meeting will begin with a presentation by Don Furman who is the Library Board President on why communities need public libraries in the future. Then the focus will shift to the impending purchase of the Garner Golf and Country Club.
The council will hold a public hearing on the annexing of the course and those portions surrounding the course. The council will hear public opinion on the matter as to whether the council should operate the facility. The council intends to hand over operation of the course to an as yet unidentified non-profit group, once the site is purchased.
Once the public hearing is concluded, the council will review and approve the offer to purchase the course from the Garner Golf and Country Club Incorporated. The council intends to purchase the course at the amount of debt incurred by the club for the fiscal 2013 year. Currently that amount is believed to be around $140,000.
The council will then amend the Urban Renewal Amendment to include the course and club and include the Army Reserve property, and Hejlik’s 3rd subdivision.
The golf course and country club will need capital improvements done to the site so the council will discuss and approve a resolution for an internal loan of $38,500 from the local option sales tax for capital purchases. They will also discuss and approve a tax increment financing or TIF program for the Garner Urban Renewal District so that the project can begin to go forward.
The Urban Renewal Report for 2012-13 will be reviewed as will the Financial Report for the same time frame. The council will then discuss the Park’s and Recreations grant application to the Hansen Foundation for new playground equipment at Reichardt Park.
