A law enforcement committee for the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors has determined that the Village Chateau motel property in Forest City is the top choice for the new Winnebago County Law Enforcement facility. ANother site, adjacent to Pizza Hut on Highway 9 in Forest City was also discussed, but the committee felt the motel property would better serve law enforcement from an access point of view.
The proposed facility would house a 22 bed jail along with law enforcement offices, labs, and storage. It is believed that the building would encompass 18,000 square feet and the property in question is around 77,000 square feet. It would cost around $83,000 to develop according to officials.
No final vote has been taken on the facility itself and officials are discussing price with the current owner of the property. It is expected that final votes will be completed sometime in May when votes on general obligation bonds have been taken and approved by the Board of Supervisors.
